Once infected, the worms travel through the bloodstream and take up residence in the heart, lungs, and surrounding blood vessels, where they can grow up to 12 inches long.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eLeft untreated, heartworm disease causes severe lung disease, heart failure, and damage to other organs. It is \u003cstrong\u003enot something that goes away on its own\u003c\/strong\u003e — and without treatment, it is fatal. Treatment is intensive, expensive, and requires weeks of strict rest and monitoring.
